FURNITURE   \ ˈfər-ni-chər

: equipment that is necessary, useful or desirable: as moveable articles used in readying an area for occupancy or use.

This is a broad definition to be sure. Most of us find it convenient to break down this category into subsets, as we might be thinking about different categories of furniture at different times. Some of the categories that we routinely fulfill at Willard Woodwrights include:

Nomadic Furniture

Most furniture manufactures do not recognize this category. This simply proves that we are not like most furniture manufacturers. I recognized this type of furniture as “necessary, useful and desirable” when I proved to myself that it represented a quantum improvement in comfort and life quality while pursuing an active outdoor lifestyle. Ergo, the E-Z Bob! It has proven itself to be a most useful adjunct in camp life over many years. Conversely, some years ago, we were asked to create a scaled-up version of this chair for one of our plus-size clients. That would be the Big Bob which has not been retained as a production item. While successful for its intended owner I believe that this iteration lacks the easy portability of the original nomadic intent and is much more at home on your porch.

Children’s Furniture

I like this category a lot. I don’t necessarily believe that child-sized plastic furniture is apostasy, but I do believe that wood furniture tends to survive use by children much more reliably. Since we consciously plan to produce items which can serve multiple generations, this is important to us, and hopefully to you. Our childs rocking chair, the Lil’ Sid is a reimagining of a rocker which I used as a child. The original was edge-glued Sugar Maple and heavy for its size. The new design is Baltic Birch plywood which allows us to ship it knocked down for easy assembly at your home. It looks equally good with clear finish or paint.

Home Furnishings

This category can take several forms, sone of which are featured production items. At present, we are producing our reproduction Gustav Stickley designed tabouret in Black Cherry and quarter sawn White Oak.  Other species are available on a special-order basis.

We also currently produce several varieties of benches suitable for foyer/mudroom use. And then, finally, and although this offering might not say “furniture” to you, we do produce and install custom built-in furniture and shelving, from our plan or yours. This work is necessarily only available in a limited radius from our shop.
